The GRE Subject Tests, developed and administered by ETS, assess undergraduate-level knowledge in specific disciplines. As of 2025, ETS offers three Subject Tests: Mathematics, Physics, and Psychology. Each exam is paper-based, lasts 2 hours and 50 minutes, and consists entirely of multiple-choice questions.
The Mathematics Test contains approximately 66 questions covering calculus (50%), algebra (25%), and additional topics like discrete math, geometry, and probability (25%). The Physics Test includes about 100 questions on classical mechanics, electromagnetism, quantum physics, thermodynamics, and laboratory methods. The Psychology Test features roughly 205 questions spanning biological, cognitive, social, developmental, and clinical psychology, plus measurement and research design.
Key Features of the ETS Subject Test Format
All GRE Subject Tests are scored on a 200–990 scale, in 10-point increments. Unlike the General Test, they are not adaptive and are administered only three times per year—typically in April, September, and October—at designated test centers worldwide. Registration must be completed well in advance through the official ETS website.
ETS designs these exams for students with strong undergraduate preparation in the respective field. They are not substitutes for the GRE General Test; some PhD programs require both. Always verify your target program’s requirements before registering.
Scores are valid for five years. Unofficial results are not provided on test day; official scores are released online approximately five weeks after the exam.
