The GED math test lasts 115 minutes (1 hour and 55 minutes). This is the longest of the four GED subject exams and is divided into two parts. The first part includes 5 questions and does not allow a calculator. The second part contains 40–44 questions and permits the use of an on-screen calculator (TI-30XS). Together, they total 45–49 questions.
The math section covers quantitative problem-solving, algebraic reasoning, geometry, and data analysis. You’ll encounter multiple question formats: multiple choice, fill-in-the-blank, drag-and-drop, and hot spot items. Despite its length, the GED math test is designed to be completed within the time limit if you manage pacing wisely.
Most test takers spend about 2 minutes per question in the calculator section and slightly less in the non-calculator portion. Since you can skip and return to questions within each part, effective time management is key to finishing on time.
Maximizing Your Time on GED Math
To use the 115 minutes efficiently:
- Spend no more than 3 minutes on any single question.
- Flag difficult items and return after answering easier ones.
- Use the provided formula sheet—but know how to apply formulas quickly.
Because GED math accounts for one-fourth of your credential, pacing directly impacts your success. Rushing leads to careless errors; lingering too long risks incomplete sections.
Practice with full-length, timed tests to build stamina. Many students finish with 5–10 minutes to review.
The GED math section is challenging but manageable with the right strategy.
Your goal isn’t speed alone—it’s steady, accurate progress across all 115 minutes.
