Does Harvard Accept GED?

Yes, Harvard University accepts applicants with a GED (General Educational Development) certificate as an alternative to a traditional high school diploma for undergraduate admission to Harvard College. The university’s admissions process is holistic and does not require a specific type of secondary education credential. Instead, Harvard evaluates each applicant individually, considering academic preparation, intellectual vitality, personal qualities, extracurricular involvement, essays, recommendations, and overall fit for the community.

While a GED meets the basic eligibility requirement, admission is highly competitive, with acceptance rates typically between 3–5%. GED holders must demonstrate exceptional readiness for Harvard’s rigorous academic environment. To strengthen their applications, successful GED applicants often:

  • Score highly on the GED (ideally 165+ per subject, with 175+ being more competitive).
  • Achieve strong SAT or ACT scores (e.g., 1580+ SAT or 35+ ACT aligns with Harvard’s 75th percentile).
  • Complete college-level coursework through community colleges, online programs, AP/IB exams, or dual-enrollment to show academic rigor.
  • Present compelling personal narratives especially stories of resilience, leadership, or overcoming challenges in their essays and interviews.

Harvard explicitly states that it gives “careful, individual attention” to every application and welcomes diverse educational backgrounds. A non-traditional path, including earning a GED, is not a barrier and can even be an advantage if it highlights unique experiences and determination.

Note: Requirements differ for the Harvard Extension School’s undergraduate degree program, which may require the GED to be earned at least five years prior but this does not apply to Harvard College.

In short, a GED does not disqualify you from Harvard. Many GED holders have been admitted and excelled. Focus on building a standout, authentic application that showcases your potential and story.
