Harvard Business School (HBS) doesn’t publish a strict GMAT cutoff, but competitive applicants typically score well above the average. For the most recent incoming class, the median GMAT score was 730, with the middle 80% of admitted students scoring between 700 and 770. While a score in this range significantly strengthens your application, HBS evaluates candidates holistically considering leadership potential, work experience, essays, recommendations, and more.
That said, scoring below 700 doesn’t automatically disqualify you, especially if other parts of your profile are exceptional. Conversely, a perfect 800 won’t guarantee admission if the rest of your application lacks depth or alignment with HBS’s values. Admissions officers look for intellectual curiosity, impact, and collaborative spirit not just test-taking prowess.
If you're aiming for Harvard, strive for a GMAT score of 720 or higher to remain competitive. However, remember that the GMAT is just one component of a much broader picture. Focus equally on crafting compelling narratives, demonstrating leadership, and showcasing your unique contributions to the HBS community.
Also note that HBS accepts the GRE in lieu of the GMAT, and there’s no preference between the two. If you perform better on the GRE, that route may serve you just as well.
