If you fail the HiSET, you can retake the subject you didn’t pass, there is no permanent failure. Failing one or more sections does not erase your passing scores. You only need to retake the subjects where you scored below 8 out of 20, or earned less than a 2 on the Writing essay.
You may retake each subject up to three times per year. After your third attempt, you must wait 60 days before trying again. Between those attempts, you can retest after just 1 day, so you can improve quickly if you study.
What Happens If You Fail the HiSET
Your official score report shows exactly where you fell short,by skill area (e.g., “Algebra,” “Main Idea,” or “Grammar”). Use this to target your next study session. Many who fail the HiSET pass on their second try with focused review using official materials from hiset.ets.org.
Each retake costs money, but most states offer discounted retake rates (often $10–$20) for the first two attempts within a 12-month window. Don’t assume you must wait months, plan your retake as soon as you’re ready.
Failing the HiSET is common. Over 40% of test takers need to retake at least one subject. It doesn’t mean you’re unprepared,it means you’re human.
The HiSET is designed to give you multiple chances to prove your skills.
