What Is the Minimum Score to Pass a GED Test?

The GED (General Educational Development) test is a high school equivalency credential consisting of four subject areas: Mathematical Reasoning, Reasoning Through Language Arts (RLA), Social Studies, and Science. Each section is scored on a scale of 100 to 200 points, with a total possible score of 800 across all four tests.

To pass the GED, you must achieve a minimum score of 145 on each individual subject test. This is the standard passing threshold set by the GED Testing Service. Scoring below 145 on any one section means you fail that subject and must retake it, even if your overall average is higher.

There are also two higher achievement levels:

  • GED College Ready (165–174): Indicates readiness for credit-bearing college courses without remediation.
  • GED College Ready + Credit (175–200): May earn college credits in some institutions, depending on the subject and school policy.

You do not need a combined total score to pass only the per-subject minimum of 145. For example:

  • Math: 145
  • RLA: 148
  • Social Studies: 150
  • Science: 142 → Fail (must retake Science)

Retakes are allowed (up to three times per subject per year in most states), and scores don’t expire. Preparation through official GED practice tests is key, as the exam is computer-based and adaptive in difficulty.

In summary: Pass each of the four tests with at least 145 points. This earns your high school equivalency diploma, recognized by employers and colleges nationwide.
